Grey

Grey Song

Tell me the sun will shine
Tomorrow will be clear and fine
Tell me it will take away
This overwhelming grey.

Grey sky absorbs
The colours of the world
Consumes them, hides them
Hills fade into the distance
Grey on grey, black on black.

Yet in a corner of the drive
A group of daffodils now thrive
Light up my day with verdant
Leaves and buttercup flowers.

I think daffodils must be one of my favourite spring flowers. They are such messengers of hope! You see them and know with absolute certainty that spring, and warmer weather, is just around the corner. Food for the soul!

With the sap rising in the trees and in our winter bones, this week my thoughts have turned to spring. This poem by Wordsworth was one of my mom’s favourite and is one of mine as well. Reading the lines, the mind’s eye is filled with the image of the lake beside the daffodils,  and the host of daffodils fluttering and waving in the breeze. What are your favourite spring poems and poets?

The Daffodils

William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the Milky Way,

They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A Poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.
